A Gathering of Vision...

We are a diverse network of community organizers and activists who sense an emerging opportunity for exciting project development.

Each of us is here for different reasons, with a different professional background and different skills. Some of us are designers, some are conveners, some are programmers, some are scholars, some are organizers, some are business people — and all of us are passionate about community, about helping bring people together, about bringing the shared wisdom and skill of the world into a common framework where it can do the most good.

We've been gathering up our thoughts about why we're coming together and what we hope to do.

Here are a few...

Bill

I'm interested in:

* Promoting and strengthening neighborhoods on both local, regional, and national levels

* Learning more about similar efforts of others; and

* Collaborating with others to fulfill these purposes as might be needed

Richard

I want to work with others in practical ways to help each others efforts to build community locally and globally.

I hope to find new ways to collaborate and look for synergies so that we can bring diverse networks together in each community and globally to build a new spiritually-based civilization, a new form of "globalization", what Mahatma Gandhi called a "commonwealth of village republics" worldwide.

I give my life energy and my life to this.

Giving and receiving Love.

Christina

I am deeply committed to social justice and to the idea of people coming together on common purpose to change our world. I am hoping to learn more about others' efforts, and see how we might be able to collaborate to advance our common work.

Cheryl

I recognized after a meeting with Craiglist Foundation that we don't have a clear understanding of what technologies have been developed over the years to help create more cohesive and resilient communities. I believe it would be helpful to know what is being used to help neighbors communicate with each other. What is working. what models are used to mobilize and engage neighbors. Why they work.

I also believe that if we work as a collaborative community of Community Builders we can tap the collective intelligence of the whole to move this field forward and identify gaps.

By being interconnected we can form new partnerships and collaborations that will emerge into a set of tools that will advance the Community Building and Public Engagement field.

Conditions in our community are shifting rapidly. We must move swiftly to network people together in order to navigate the great turning.

Carline

I am here to learn, help and support community builders harness technology to build stronger communities where they live.

I am hoping to connect with liked minded community lovers and become a contributing member to this important movement which I believe is critical to the quality of life my children will have.

I would like to see us work more together and leverage our resources and knowledge to impact our communities in a positive way.

There is no better way to express commitment then by doing.

Collaboration/cooperation and community building focused rather than self-rewarding will keep me coming back.

Ben

As noted in my answer to another survey question, Bruce Schuman and I have a new set of dialogic tools for working with groups of all sizes, combining "Cafe Calls" (a phone-based world cafe process) with an online space for harvesting insights and continued dialogue. We want to offer these tools far and wide in the service of building and energizing community and creating/strengthening alliances. Are you a part of or do you know of a group that might be interested?

Leo

What excites you about this project? Connecting with good people, specially those who do neighborhood-based community building.

What are you hoping to do? What would you like to see happen? Want to see people work together to help neighbors help neighbors and themselves.

What is your commitment? Been committed to the cause for years; if this tool/process helps, then I'd commit to help it thrive as well.

What will keep you coming back? Will keep coming back to see who/what's new, what others are up to.

Bruce

I am excited to be working with other computer-oriented community organizers. I think we are pioneering an important new area, probably with huge market potential and opportunities.

I'd like to see this "survey" system evolve into a comprehensive framework we could introduce to community organizers everywhere, for a wide variety of related applications. I think we can "build tools" that can accomplish a lot of good, and spearhead the development of new solutions to old and very difficult problems (the Rodney King issue: Can't we all get along?)

What will keep me coming back? A sense that this work is growing, a sense that the people we are attracting are also excited and feeling a creative energy -- a sense that we are truly being helpful, that this project can succeed and bring real good into the world...
